National Stroke Awareness Month National Stroke Association strives to provide everyone with the tools and inspiration to raise public awareness about stroke by hosting awareness events or activities.

Stroke is the third leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in America, but many people do not realize how educating themselves and others will help reduce the incidence of stroke. We urge you to specifically educate others about how to:

·   STOP stroke through risk

    factor management.

·    Act F.A.S.T. to increase

    recognition of and

    response to stroke

    symptoms.

·    Spread HOPE about

     recovery from stroke.

Are You Ready to Get Involved?

National Stroke Awareness Month is a great opportunity to educate your friends, family and community about stroke. But it does require some planning ahead.

To start planning your awareness activity, start thinking about how you can spread awareness. Here are some questions to think about:

·    What can I do to raise

     stroke awareness during

     May?

·    How can I hold an

     awareness fundraiser

     during May?

·    What can I do in my

     workplace?

·    What can I do in my

     community?

·     What can I do for my

      hospital’s stroke team?

·    What can I do to educate

     my fellow rehabilitation

    colleagues?

·   What can I do for my

     stroke support group?

"While Strolling in the park One Day"

(The Fountain in the Park)

While strolling through the park one day
In the merry merry month of May
I was taken by surprise
By a pair of roguish eyes
In a moment my poor heart was stole away

A smile was all she
gave to me
Of course we were
as happy as can be

I immediately raised my hat
And finally she remarked
I never shall forget
That lovely afternoon
I met her at the fountain
in the park

While strolling through
the park one day
In the merry merry
month of May
I was taken by surprise
By a pair of roguish eyes
In the merry merry month of May.

Memorial Day is often known as the official kick off weekend for summer at the Jersey Shore, as well as the start of the summer sales season, but at Schwartz Mazda of Shrewsbury, we not only acknowledge the history of this holiday, but our family takes pride in our own lineage of soldiers who have helped us to value all those who have lived and died for our country.

Our dealership was founded in 1919 by Maurice Schwartz after his first discharge from the United States Army. He had served as an ordinance sergeant in France during World War I. He returned stateside and ran the dealership until 1942. After the outbreak of World War II, Maurice Schwartz made several attempts to rejoin the U.S. Army. At this time, he received his commission from General Omar Bradley. He was honorably discharged as Lt. Colonal after serving two and a half years in the China-Burma-India area in charge of assembling motor vehicles shipped in to that area. During World War II, the business was run by Bessie Schwartz (Mrs. Maurice Schwartz) with the aid of five employees while Maurice dutifully served our country. Maurice Schwartz’s loyalty and bravery exemplified the same courage and characteristics of the honorable men and women we now memorialize on this national holiday.

Believe it or not, Memorial Day was first observed on May 5th, 1866 in Waterloo, New York and originally known to be ?Decoration Day?. It was largely because of the roles of both General John Murray and General John A. Logan, who also greatly influenced the attention and initial recognition of this holiday throughout our nation, that what was once known as ?Decoration Day? became known and observed as Memorial Day as we now know the last Monday of each May to be Memorial Day.

As we embark upon the summer of 2010, please keep the fallen soldiers who have given their lives so that we may be able to enjoy the freedoms we most often take for granted as we enjoy spending time with our loved ones this Memorial Day. Please stop by our dealership and take advantage of our special buying program for members of the military and unique sales especially for Memorial Day.

How to Clean Film Off Windows

Hard water not only affects the dishes that are washed in it, but windows as well. Film is the result of excess minerals found in hard water such as calcium and magnesium that cool, dry and adhere to whatever surface it's touching leaving an unclean foggy look. Removing film from windows is easier than you think and the benefits are worth the extra time.

1.   Mix a solution of equal parts water and vinegar into a spray bottle.

2.   Add a cap full of ammonia and a teaspoon of dish soap.

3.   Spray the window with the solution.

4.   Wipe the window clean with scrunched up newspapers to clean the glass.

5.   Shine the area with a soft, clean towel.

 Orange Pecan French Toast

Ingredients

1 cup packed brown sugar                          1/2 cup 2% milk

1/3 cup butter, melted                                   3 tablespoons white sugar

2 tablespoons light corn syrup                   1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/3 cup chopped pecans                             1 teaspoon vanilla extract

12 (3/4 inch thick) slices French bread     3 egg whites

1 teaspoon grated orange zest                   2 eggs

1 cup fresh orange juice                              1 tablespoon confectioner's sugar

Directions

In a small bowl, stir together the brown sugar, melted butter, and corn syrup. Pour into a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, and spread evenly. Sprinkle pecans over the sugar mixture. Arrange the bread slices in the bottom of the dish so they are in a snug single layer.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the orange zest, orange juice, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, egg whites, and eggs. Pour this mixture over the bread, pressing on the bread slices to help absorb the liquid. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour, or overnight.

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Remove the cover from the baking dish, and let stand for 20 minutes at room temperature.

Bake for 35 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown. Dust with confectioners' sugar before serving.

Top 5 Crops for Children

Here are the "top 10" crops, which are relatively easy to grow, have short growing seasons and are fun to harvest.

SUNFLOWERS
A must for a child's garden. Plant just one or two, since they take a lot of room. Sunflowers will sprout in 1 week, become a small seedling in 2 weeks, and should be 2' tall in a month. In 8 weeks, the buds will flower revealing hundreds of seed kernels.  They will dry naturally in the late summer sun; the seeds, rich in protein and iron, can be roasted for snacks. Save a few for next summers' planting.

RADISHES
Quick results for the young gardener. Radishes germinate in 3-10 days, and have a very short growing season of 20-30 days. They can be planted closely, 4-6" apart. Plant in cool weather for a mild radish, or hot weather for a hotter radish.

SNOW PEAS
A quick-growing early crop, and fun for kids to eat right off the vine. They take about 10 days to germinate and mature in about 60 days. Peas prefer cooler, partially shaded locations in the garden; they should be sown closely, about 1" apart at most.

CHERRY TOMATOES

Gotta have 'em! These may be the most fun crop for a child, aside from strawberries. Plant in full sun and use seedlings rather than planting from seed. Put in a 2' stake alongside each seedling; they need to be tied loosely to stakes as they get taller. Add lots of compost. Water at ground level, trying to keep leaves dry. Growing season is 50-75 days.

NASTURIUMS
These flowers are easy to grow and yield results quickly, which encourages the young gardener. Nasturtiums bloom about 50 days after the seeds are planted, with orange, yellow and red flowers. They prefer sunny, dry locations and do well in poor soil. The flowers are also edible, and can be used to add colour to a fresh garden salad.

Did JD Power Copy Maurice Schwartz?
Quality Customer Satisfaction
Since 1919

Maurice Schwartz was 50 years ahead of his time before JD Power became an expert in surveying customers. Back to August 29, 1935, the Red Bank Register wrote an article about Maurice Schwartz & Sons, Inc. During that time, the Register thought it was a novel idea that Maurice Schwartz had started a plan called “A Penny for Your Thoughts”. It was a questionnaire that was given to our service customers. The questionnaire had a number of questions including: does service count; does our service satisfy you; etc. If you take a walk along the wall in our Service Department you will read the notes of appreciation from our customers in response to that questionnaire.

One letter in particular tells the story best. Alma & George wrote they were purchasing their twelfth or thirteenth car from Schwartz & Sons. Over the twenty year span of buying cars, their children and grandchildren benefited from those purchases as the cars were passed down. It was because of the “safety and reliability” given to them that they were repeat customers.

Many of the letters and surveys noted that Schwartz was “fair” in our dealings with our customers. Today, we have the same philosophy. When Maurice Schwartz started this business it was his desire to sell quality automobiles and treat his customers the way he wanted to be treated - fairly. Today, Jim & Jon make every effort to run Schwartz & Sons just like their grandfather, Maurice.

The next time you stop by for service or parts or to purchase your next vehicle, take a walk down memory lane and read all about our history located in the Café area as well as the Service area.

2010 Mazda 3 s 5-Door Grand Touring

Our Mazda hatch continues to warm hearts as the snow begins to melt.

Car and Driver Magazine
March 2010

With just over 10,000 miles on the clock, our long-term Mazda 3 hatchback is a quarter of the way through its test, and it’s racking up praise at a significant pace. Drama-free to live with yet lively behind the wheel, the little Mazda made it through winter’s worst (at least we hope it’s over) and is ready for some warm months of travel and driving fun.

A Faithful Steed

Overall fuel economy remains a solid 24 mpg, and the Mazda is proving to be a welcome and trouble-free companion on longer trips. We are, however, looking forward to taking the five-door on adventures lengthier than the several Ann Arbor-to-Chicago runs it has under its belt. The healthy 43 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded should accommodate plenty of supplies for a quick blast to the West Coast or a camping trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Nit-Picking
It's been a struggle so far to find any major fault with the vehicle. But most of the comments in the logbook continue to commend the 3's surprisingly playful demeaor. the clutch and the six-speed shifter in particular have been called out for their light, smooth action, both of which make the long commutes of some editors to the office much easier. "So quiet and refind on the highway," read on logbook entry, "I forgot I wasn't driving a German car."

BERRY GOAT CHEESE SALAD
Serves 4
Use seasonal berries for this refreshing salad, matching tangy goat cheese with sweet berries, roasted red onions, walnuts and tomatoes.

Ingredients

Salad
1 medium red onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 tablespoon canola oil
8 cups (about 12 ounces) spring lettuce mix
1/4 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
1/2 cup yellow grape tomatoes, halved
1 cup mixed seasonal berries, such as strawberries,
     blackberries, raspberries and blueberries
4 ounces goat cheese, crumbled

Vinaigrette

2 tablespoons raspberry or sherry vinegar
1/4 teaspoon lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons sugar
Salt and pepper
1/4 cup canola oil

Method

Preheat oven to 350°F. Toss onion with canola oil and a pinch of salt and pepper, and place on a rimmed baking sheet. Roast until onion is soft and lightly browned, 15 to 20 minutes. Set aside to cool.
For the vinaigrette, whisk together raspberry vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, salt and pepper. Drizzle in the oil while continuing to whisk, until vinaigrette slightly thickens. Taste and adjust seasoning.
Toss spring mix, walnuts, tomatoes, berries, goat cheese and roasted onions with vinaigrette. Serve immediately.

Ballpoint-Ink Stain

Plant a Flower Day

When: Always March 12th

Plant a Flower Day is a day to get a little dirt under your fingernails. Take a few minutes to plant a flower today.

Gardening is a great hobby. It's enjoyed by millions of people, old and young alike. Its a hobby that virtually everyone can participate in, regardless of age, and health. Senior citizens love it, as they can garden long after they give up other hobbies and sports.

Identifying the correct date for celebrating Plant a Flower Day has proved frustrating and  a bit futile. As we researched this day, we found multiple dates in March and May for Plant a Flower Day. We found no content sites defining the day, and no written documentation. No one claimed to be the creator of this day either.

Celebrate today by planting or transplanting any kind of plant. It can be done indoors, or weather permitting, outdoors.

***DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME***
March 14th marks Daylight Savings Time. Be sure to move your clocks one hour ahead!

The most trusted provider of vehicle history information, CARFAX is used by millions of consumers each year. CARFAX Vehicle History Reports™ are available on all used cars and light trucks model year 1981 or later. Using the unique 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN), a CARFAX Report is instantly generated from their database of over six billion records.

Every CARFAX Report contains information that can impact a consumer's decision about a used vehicle. Some types of information that a CARFAX Report may include are:

Title information, including salvaged or junked titles
Flood damage history
Total loss accident history
Odometer readings
Lemon history
Number of owners
Accident indicators, such as airbag deployments
State emissions inspection results
Service records**
Vehicle use (taxi, rental, lease, etc.)

CARFAX receives information from more than 20,000 data sources including every U.S. and Canadian provincial motor vehicle agency plus many auto auctions, fire and police departments, collision repair facilities, fleet management and rental agencies, and more.

What Makes Them Unique

CARFAX started with a vision - to be the leading source of vehicle history information for buyers and sellers of used cars. Today, CARFAX has the most comprehensive vehicle history database available in North America. Carfax.com is one of the top five websites that consumers turn to for vehicle information, and receives millions of visitors each month. Sadly, only 20% of dealers report to CARFAX, though is it free for dealers to report their information. Only car dealers have this option.

** Many people do not realize that CARFAX not only keeps records of any accidents, they keep account of your service records that you have with the car dealer who participates with the service. At Schwartz & Sons, our Service Dept is proud to be a part of CARFAX. When you have your car serviced here, the records are reported to CARFAX. So when you are ready to sell it, the CARFAX report will reflect your service history. This will give you peace of mind and assist in selling your car.

Getting your car ready for the road

Ready to hit the road and get away from it all? Make sure your car is ready for the journey, too.

Few things spoil a road trip or family vacation more quickly than car trouble far from home. Who wants to spend even a moment of a hard-earned holiday on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck?

A pre-trip auto checkup could make all the difference. Take good care of your car before you leave, and it will take good care of you out on the road.

An ounce of prevention

Packing a roadside survival kit will make any auto mishap that does come along a whole lot easier to deal with.

One to safeguard your road trip is to let a mechanic perform a full safety inspection on your car a week or two before your trip.

"Do it at least a week before you go so if something pops up, it would give the repair shop time to take care of it," says Bill Csogi, an 22-year ASE certified master mechanic.

Having a mechanic look at your car the day before your trip is not a good idea. If there's a problem, it could take some time to fix.

A big, last-second auto repair could really throw a wrench into your vacation plans or even force you to delay your trip.

Let a mechanic give your car the once-over a week or two before your trip. In a safety inspection, a mechanic will check everything from fluid levels, belts and hoses to lights and tires and brakes.

Low coolant or antifreeze, a fraying belt or a worn-down hose could lead to big trouble out on the road. A small repair now could spare you a big expensive repair later on.

And there are plenty of things you can do on your own to help get your car ready for a long road trip.

Schwartz performs a Full Circle Inspection at no charge to every customer when they bring their car in for service.

Whatever the cost of a safety inspection, you should consider it money well spent.

Prepare for the worst

No matter how much maintenance you and your mechanic do on a car before a trip, there's no guarantee that you won't have auto troubles out on the road.

"Keep in mind nobody has a crystal ball," Bennett says. "It may look good today and tomorrow something may happen."

February is National Bird Feeding Month!

February is National Bird Feeding month! February 13th - February 16th is the Great Backyard Bird Count Week. So let's celebrate, feed our furry friends, build them great habitats in our back yards and count how many we can see enjoying our presents to them!

You can either purchase bird feeders online or at many major hardware, retail and garden stores or you can make your own.

If you are looking for more natural and environmentally safe bird feeders consider using fruit, bread or pinecones to make bird feeders out of. Birds love eating and drinking the nectar from orange slices. They also love to eat bird seeds that cover a pinecone, bagel or piece of toast using peanut butter to stick the seeds to these items.

Once you have food out for your birds, make sure they have something to drink from as well. Simply buy a bird bath or place a dinner dish out in your yard and fill it daily with fresh clean water. Be sure and place the plate near your bird feeder so the birds can eat and drink in one spot.

It's more than you think!

So let a mechanic give your car the once-over a week or two before your trip.

If you're a regular customer, a mechanic may charge you next to nothing for a safety inspection. Other customers can expect to pay the cost of a full hour of labor.

Having a roadside survival kit at the ready will make an unexpected breakdown a lot less stressful.

What should you pack? A copy of your car's warranty and contact information for your emergency car care service should be at the top of the list.

Whether you have roadside assistance through your car's warranty or insurance or you belong to an auto care club such as AAA, make sure you have the emergency contact number with you at all times.

Hint from Heloise:

COFFEE STAINS
To remove coffee (or tea) stains, rinse area with cold water immediately. Rub in a couple of drops of a mild, white dishwashing liquid and rinse well. Then treat with a mixture of one-part white household vinegar and three-parts water. Rinse again and launder as you normally do. Note: If cream was used in the coffee, you may have to sponge the stain with dry-cleaning fluid.

Ten Tips To Help Women Take Care Of Their Health And The Health Of Their Families

For a majority of American families, women are the key decision makers when it comes to family health care. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women are responsible for approximately 80 percent of all decisions on family health care and are more likely to be the caregivers when someone in the family becomes ill. Therefore, it's important for women to stay informed and knowledgeable about ways to take better care of their health and the health of their families. Here are tips to help:

Manage Stress

1. Find ways to de-stress, such as exercising or simply spending time relaxing.

2. Make sure you get seven to nine hours of sleep each night, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children need even more. Not getting enough sleep is associated with a number of chronic conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and depression.

Eat Healthfully

3. Prepare healthy meals and snacks.

4. Limit alcohol intake.

5. Focus on fresh and grown-close-to-home foods when possible.

Get Regular Exams

6. Schedule physical exams for yourself and your family.

7. Make sure you and your family are up to date on preventative checkups and tests such as mammography, Pap smear, prostate cancer test and cholesterol or diabetes screenings.

Check Your Medicines

8. Organize your medicine chest and check expiration dates.

9. Plan ahead for prescription refills.

10. Determine if you and your family are eligible for free prescription assistance resources, such as the Together Rx Access® Card, which helps eligible uninsured Americans save on the medicines they need to stay healthy and to manage chronic conditions. Individuals who enroll receive a free-to-get and free-to-use card that can help them save on brand-name and generic medicines right at the pharmacy counter.

Introducing the New Mazda 2!

Magazine-thin laptops, MP3 players and bite-size candy bars are just a few examples of good things that come in small packages. Now, for the first time in North America, Mazda is introducing its own affordable, fun-sized creation - the 2011 MAZDA2. A stylish, eco-friendly, fun-to-drive five-door hatchback, the MAZDA2 is Zoom-Zoom in its most concentrated form - compact and efficient, yet packed with style and substance. It will launch into the North American market in late summer, 2010.

MAZDA2 is the latest in a line of stylish, insightful and hugely fun-to-drive small cars from Mazda, and will bring an all-new level of refinement to the segment, as MAZDA3 did for the compact C-Car market. MAZDA2 is a car that only the engineers at Mazda could have created. It was designed and engineered from scratch to be a pure Mazda, offering the sort of driving experience that could only come from the company that developed the timeless MX-5 two-seat roadster, and it brings a combination of athletic design and dynamic performance to the subcompact class that simply does not exist at this time.

The new MAZDA2 adds Mazda's unique brand values such as exhilarating driving performance and eye-catching design to the segment without sacrificing the basic requirements for subcompact cars: superior fuel efficiency, high crash safety performance and ample passenger space. In fact, while other carmakers have increased the size of their small cars, Mazda's first mission was to analyze and define the optimal size of a compact vehicle. This resulted in a very efficient body size for the new MAZDA2 without sacrificing attractive features that consumers desire.

Some of the highlights of the Mazda2:

·         Dynamic Performance

·          Exterior Design Theme: "Coordinated Movement"

·          A Powertrain for Sporty Performance with Great Fuel Economy
Nimble Handling and a Stable Ride
Superior Quietness and Aerodynamics

·          The Security of a B-Car's Functionality and Maneuverability

More information on the 2011 MAZDA2 interior, specifications and pricing will be available at a later date.

SERVICE TIPS

How to Winterize Your Car

Winter can be rough on cars, so unless you live in a warm or moderate climate, here's a list of things you can do to make sure your vehicle is ready for the upcoming cold season.

Instructions

Don't put off a 30,000-mile full service, if your car is due.

Flush the cooling system and replace the coolant.

Replace the windshield wiper blades. Put windshield washer fluid in the windshield washer reservoir (plain water will freeze).

Have the battery serviced (clean the battery terminal ends and add water) and load-tested to check its ability to hold a charge. If the battery is more than 4 1/2 years old, replace it.

Use a tire gauge to check the tire pressure. Air contracts with cold, and the tires may become low as the temperature drops.

Make sure there is air in the spare tire and that all the proper tire-changing equipment is in the trunk.

Make sure the tires are in good condition. If you are not sure what this means, ask a mechanic (in a shop that doesn't sell tires) for an opinion.

Check the lights, heater and defroster.

Keep the gas tank as full as possible to prevent moisture from freezing in the gas lines.

Get a brake check if you haven't had one in the last six months.

Put together an emergency winter kit for the trunk of your car: blanket, extra boots  and gloves, ice scraper, small snow shovel, flashlight and kitty litter (for traction when stuck in the snow).
